Anime of the Week (6)

Anime: Skip Beat!
Genre: Comedy – Drama – Romance – Shoujo
Episodes: 25
Myanimelist Rating: 8.38/10

"Skip Beat!" was my first shoujo anime. I've always watched Shounen at my younger days. When I started to watch anime again later, during college, I thought I might try to watch a Rom/Com anime. I enjoyed movies of the same genre, and though I might enjoy it as anime. I thought "Skip Beat!" would be a good start, since it had high ratings and positive reviews, and it was! Actually I kind of regret that I watched it first, since I can say it has been the best in its genre. It raised my standards, and I couldn't enjoy any shoujo anime, I've watched afterwards as much.

"Skip Beat!" is about Mogami Kyoko who pursues a career in the showbiz. However, how Kyoko came by the idea is a different story from the usual ones about ambition and dreams. The idea was born from thoughts of revenge. Kyoko dedicated her life to her childhood friend and idol Fuwa Shou. She sacrificed everything and went with him to Tokyo, where he achieved his dream. All well for Kyoko, until she overhears him one day talking about her, and realizes he has been, only, using her all along. He never cared for her. You know the saying "Beware the fury of a patient man."? That's Kyoko for you. She could never think of a better way to get revenge, for her lost years dedicated to him, but to beat him in his dream and compete with him in the showbiz. Kyoko has certainly missed a lot of a girl's normal life, being dedicated to Shou and his dreams ,that influences her characters. That was also the main source of humor in the anime; her extreme anger and fury at times, her cluelessness and clumsiness at some other times.
In the agency Kyoko joins to pursue her goal and beat Shou, she meets Tsuruga Ren, a handsome popular actor, considered by Shou as his most hated rival. Of course, Kyoko joined in the hate before, but my "Enemy's enemy is my friend.", or that would have been the case if Kyoko and Ren's first encounter was a better one. In "Skip Beat" we watch how Kyoko get along with her new goal and the new world she involves herself in. Now to the goods and bads of Skip Beat!

As for why I liked Skip beat:
-The idea of the story is so good and original, if compared with other shoujo manga. It gives you something, more interesting, to look forward to. It's not like a typical shoujo where you watch how a girl's relationship with a guy would develop. That was only part of it in Skip Beat! You look forward to how Kyoko would prove herself in the world of Showbiz, and how that will be perceived by the other characters.
-The art is very good and neat.
-The comedy in the anime, is very amusing. Kyoko's thoughts and evil spirits were funny.
-The soundtracks were one of the best I heard in Shoujo anime. They were used very well. I, also, liked the first opening theme and the two endings.
-     -Kyoko, the main character, might not be the best person in the world. She has that evil side that desires revenge, but on the other hand she can be very clumsy and innocent. You can't help but sympathize with her, feel pleased at her success and feel satisfied at seeing the shock in the eyes of her foes.
-There are some episodes that I'd keep watching over and over again in Skip Beat. They were very enjoyable, pleasing and satisfying! Yes! Satisfying! :D XD

As for the shortcomings of Skip Beat there's a big one and possibly the only one:
-The anime stopped early in the manga, with an open end, which was very frustrating. You can follow from the manga, but it has been very slow paced and boring recently. The chapters that had already been released when I finished watching Skip Beat, which were many, were so good and enjoyable to read. I wanted to watch them badly in animation. However, it became weird and slow later, or that's what I think. I can't see it coming to an end anytime soon. Bottom line, there's no closure!

That's all for Skip Beat! I wanted to include some of my favorite scenes, episodes and chapters, but it's too long already.
On a second thought, I might say briefly (Spoilers!! -->) that I liked the episodes with Kyoko being Ren's substitute assistant, and Fuwa Shou's video clip! I love that one. In the manga, I liked the Christmas and Kyoko's birthday celebration very much. I liked loads of other stuff but that's enough for now!

My Rating: 8/10

Note! I tried to avoid adding pictures that might contain spoilers, so other than the couple of lines in the end, this post is spoiler free!

Song of the Day (28)

Song: No Reply
Artist: The Beatles
Album: Beatles for Sale
Year: 1964
Genre: Rock

No Reply is a Beatles' song written by John Lennon and recorded in 1964. The song is about a guy whose girlfriend doesn't reply to his calls, pretending she's not there but he sees her and knows she's lying. He sees her with another man and it hurts him but he's ready to forgive her, if she realizes that he loves her the most. The song was praised for bring story-like and complete; it felt like watching pictures in a girls' comic book. Lennon mentioned that the song was inspired by The Rays' Silhouettes from 1957.
Well, that's the story of the song, but that has nothing to do with why I like it. I'm not interested in romantic songs, let alone ones about cheating girlfriends. I prefer happy songs. No Reply's lyrics might not be happy, but I thought the music was, possibly, because it was based on a major chord (C-Major). Also, when I hear the song a certain scene comes to mind. We were in Alexandria. It was in autumn, late October or early November. It was before sunset, and the weather was magnificent. The cool air of autumn was blowing. We were driving by the sea, passing by the old buildings worn out by the sea, but still looking good; and I was listening to No Reply! :)

That's not my Photo. It's a shame I didn't think of taking a photo
back then. I don't have the mindset of a photographer after all.

Movie of the week (6)

Movie: Source code
Genre: Mystery, Sci-fi, Thriller
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Vera Farmiga, Michelle Monaghan & Jeffry Wright
Release date: April, 2011
IMDB rating: 7,5/10
Rotten tomatoes rating: 92%
Plot: Colter Stevens wakes up to find himself on a moving train with a woman named Christina, sitting opposite him who seems to know him. Colter starts to panic remembering that he is a soldier and the last he recalls is being in a mission. 8 minutes later the train is blown up and everyone on board dies, but Colter lands in his cubicle with a woman's voice speaking to him.

It seems Colter is part of a governmental experiment called Source code. This experiment allows Colter to be transported into the body of another man who was on that train. The main goal is for Colter to gather as much clues and information as possible to lead the government to the terrorist's next target. The problem lies in the fact that Colter only has the last 8 minutes in the man's life to grasp as many as he can. He is also struggling with his memories to recall how he ended up in that experiment, and to find a way to save Christina whom he fell for.

My opinion: It's been quite a journey with this movie for me. It took me around two years to finally watch it :D I've had it downloaded on my laptop and just never had the energy to watch it, but I'm so glad I did.
The story is very intriguing and had me glued to my laptop screen waiting for what's next. The idea of the source code was very new to me and I found it very smart. I love movies that present new ideas I'm not familiar with and get me searching and thinking.
The performances were very good and I especially liked Vera Farmiga, she was a character that had to be tough for her job but hasn't set aside her feelings as a human. She was Colter's connection to the world, his soothing voice and only friend.

The visual effects were needed in this movie to replay the train's explosion scene over and over again and they were good. I found them shocking in the last scene as well, but I won't talk about that so nothing would be revealed :D

The movie is only and hour and a half and when it was over I felt it was too short, but they were well spent and much better that sitting around for two boring hours :) I'd recommend this movie to anyone looking for a thrilling experience.
My rating: 8.5/10

Book of the week (6)

Book: A thousand splendid suns
Author: Khaled Hosseini
Genre: Drama, Historical fiction
Release date: January, 2007
Goodreads rating: 4.30/5
About the book: This book is set in Afghanistan shifting between the stories of Mariam and Laila, two women who experienced so much misery in their unhappy lives. These women are only a little glimpse to how women were treated in that time frame in Afghanistan, they were treated like second-class, beaten, tortured and wildly wronged.
Mariam has always been neglected and hated even by her own mother. She has lead a miserable life ending up married to a cruel obnoxious man named Rasheed. On the other hand we watch beautiful Laila having a nice cheerful childhood until her life comes shattering around her and her fate leads her to Rasheed wanting to take her as his second wife.

My opinion: This is one of my all time favorites. It's such a powerful book. I remember the psychological state I was in while reading it, it was a depressing phase. The style of writing was really good and left no room for boredom, the chapters shifted between Mariam and Laila leaving us hanging at critical moments. I salute Hosseini for the idea, not everyone can pull off this style.

The characters are very well developed and you jump right into their lives experiencing all the misfortune with them. I loved knowing the characters since their youth, because then you could see what made them the way they are. You watch their life choices and fate intertwining into that great epic story. You see the imperfections, humanity and compassion.

This book was considered as a continuation of Hosseini's previous novel The kite runner in the sense of the main theme in the books FAMILY. The kite runner was a father-son story and this time A thousand splendid suns is a mother-daughter story. Hosseini has a soft spot for familial relations, it has been his signature throughout his three books and gladly I'm not tired of it yet, his stories hold so much emotions and enjoyable relationships.

Finally, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for books about people, nothing fancy just deep, heartwarming feelings. I assure you this book will leave you thinking and appreciating what you have in life more.

My rating: 9.5/10
Bonus: There have been plans for a movie production since 2009. In 2013 it was announced that the production has started and hopefully the movie would see the light by 2015.

Song of the day (27)

Best day of my life

Artist: American Authors
Album: Oh, What a life
Genre: Indie rock, indie folk, indie pop
Release date: March, 2013
About the song: Best day of my life is a cheerful fun song that has revolved around the world in people's special occasions :D This song is very dear to me, besides the fact that it's a great song, the first time I heard it I was at a friend's graduation ceremony. I felt overwhelmed at the time, since I was only two months away from my own graduation. The song was playing in the background as they were receiving their diplomas and having that group photo with the flying caps ^_^ I remember thinking "Wow this song is so good, I wish we could play it in our graduation ceremony. If it ever happened".

The song was well received by critics and the percussion were praised. It was written and developed by the band members who said they were inspired by African rhythms. The song was featured in TV shows like Glee and The vampire diaries. It was use in the trailers of the movies The delivery man and The secret life of Walter Mitty. The song also witnessed the coronation moment of Miss America 2015.

The music video features a guy and a cute monster being best buddies :D They drink together at a bar, play basketball, have cool photographs ^_^

The last note I want to pinpoint is that the first few seconds felt like Imagine dragons style, but that's fine I still love the song anyway.

Song of the Day (24)

Song: Crescendo
Artist: Stella Quintet
Genre: J-pop
Year: 2008

Crescendo is a single by the band Stella Quintet. It's used as the ending song for the anime La corda d'oro: primo passo. The ending song is very one of the few things I liked in the anime. It thought it was catchy. It's a romantic song, with fine lyrics that perfectly suit the anime. The music is very nice and the singing goes well with it. The combination makes it something enjoyable to listen to.
Something I found interesting about the song is the performing band: Stella Quintet. Apparently, the band is formed from the 5 main guys in the anime La Corda d'oro: Tsukimuri, Tsuchiura, Hihara, Shimizu and Yunoki … in other words, their voice actors, and the players of the musical instruments that each character specializes in. There are many things within this discovery that caused my utter astonishment
First, that 5 people who never sang together before this could produce something so good.
Second, the fact that the five of them with exception of one, are only voice actors, they don't sing.
Third, that among the sing voices are those of Bleach's Kurosaki Ichigo ana Abarai Renji! Ichigo's voice might work but Renji's?!
Well, it's a nice song and that's all that matters
