Character of the Day (12)

Character: Katsura Kotarou

Anime: Gintama

Age: 20+

Role: Supporting

         "Zura ja nai! Katsura da" The line rings in my ears whenever Katsura is mentioned! Katsura by all means is one of my favorite Gintama characters; the leader of the moderate Joui faction, also known as the Nobleman of fury, and on top of the Wanted list of the Shinsengumi.

Apart from the fact that all Gintama characters are hilarious, Katsura's hilarious is unique. Katsura may seem like a serious, charismatic leader, but as a matter of fact, he's a total idiot. Katsura is a polite person, it's seen in his language and some of his deeds. The encounters between him and his former comrade Gintoki, who is far from polite, are always something to look forward to! XD He's, also, very outdated.

          Katsura's best friend is Elizabeth, the Amanto sent to him by his former comrade Sakamoto. He's very attached to Elizabeth who's very loyal to him in return.

          In spite of being a leader of a joui faction, Katsura chooses to oppose Takasugi in the Benizakura arc. He showed to be against the rather destructive tendencies of the kiheitai.

Katsura has deep trust in Gintoki. They've known each other since they were children. On many occasions they fall in trouble together and fight side by side. Katsura is persistent on having Gintoki come back to being a member of the joui. He also watches for Kagura and Shinpachi for Gintoki's sake.

          The feud between Katsura and the Shinsengumi is one of the most comic feuds in Gintama. Katsura uses mostly bombs against the Shinsengumi, and he usually avoid them by disguising himself, most probably as captain Katsura. He claims to be a master of disguise. In spite of his silly disguises, the Shinsengumi never sees through them.  :D

          Being a student of Yoshida Shouyou , Gintoki's and takasugi's comrade, having fought in the war by their sides and having survived, it's safe to presume that he has high swordsmanship skills.

Some of my favorite Katsura scenes are:

-When he's visiting Gintoki's place for an urgent matter and he runs into Sadaharu at the door, the beginning of episode13. The scene is hilarious and Katsura's awkwardness is priceless.

- Also, on the interview episode, when he visits the yorozuya's place to persuade Gintoki to join the joui. The scene is awesome! How he refuses to get off the door, he made hole in with his head, when it was kicked by Gintoki, because Gintoki wouldn't like a hole in the door! XD How could he be like that?! Actually, the entire episode was awesome!

-The Zurako and Paako pair at Saigo's  was also hilarious.

…. There are loads more than that, but I am writing in a hurry, so that's pretty much all I can remember.

          To conclude this, Katsura is awesome, and I've used the word hilarious too many times, but it's Gintama I'm talking about. I can't find another fitting word!
