Kuro is a Cat Sidhe
(Demon that possess cats) and the familiar of Okumura Rin. He was the familiar
of Fujimoto Shiro before he dies.
Kuro had lived peacefully
with humans protecting their silkworms. He'd receive offerings of food and festivals,
held in his name, in return. As time passes, silk cultivation becomes outdated
and Kuro is not worshipped anymore. Then, people attempt to demolish Kuro's shrine
to use the land. As a result, Kuro was outraged and he attacked them. That;s
when they contact True Cross Academy for help. They send them a group of exorcists
led by Fujimoto Shiro. However, Shiro doesn't rescolve to violence, and instead
he talks to Shiro and shares Catnip wine with him. That's when he becomes Fujimoto's
familiar and a guardian of the True Cross Academy.
When we see Kuro for the
first time, Fujimoto is already dead, killed by Satan, to protect Rin. Kuro was
ignorant of Fujimoto's death, until he heard one of the human guars talking
about it. Kuro is shocked by the news, and he turns to his former violent self.
A group of exorcists among which was Yukio and Rin is called to stop Kuro.
That's when Rin , unknowingly follows Fukimoto's steps. Rin realizes he can
understand Kuro. He understand that his rage is caused by his shock at
Fujimoto's death and his loneliness. So, he stops Yukio from using poison that
was given to him by Fujimoto to use with Kuro, had he caused trouble, in the
case of his death. Rin talks to Kuro and he calms down, and accepts Fujimoto's
death with sorrow. It also turns out that the claimed poison was nothing but
catnip wine that Kuro liked. Because of the incident Kuro takes a liking to Rin
, as he sees Fujimoto Shiro in him, and becomes his familiar. Since then, we
usually see him with Rin sleeping on his back, playing around him and asking
him to play with him.
Kuro has the ability
to change into a nekomata, a giant demon cat. That's the form we see him in
when he's enraged at the news of Fujimoto's death. He can change to it
willingly, it doesn't only come with rage.
